Classroom as a good learning place.pdf
Classroom Culture:
In a classroom culture the course instructor is the manager and the students can be considered as sub-ordinates. As the course instructor allots taks in the formof assigements and provid grades based on those, which can be considered as reward. There are mainly seven dimensions of organizational culture which are applied on the classroom. It involves creating an environment where students feel free and save to be involved. It’s a space where everyone should feel accepted and included in everything. Students should be comfortable with sharing how they feel, and teachers should be willing to take it in to help improve learning. When asking students to explore issues of personal and social identity , teachers must provide safe spaces where students are seen, valued, cared fro and repected. It is also important that students have opportunities to learn from one anothers varied experiences and perspectives. To create this learning enviroement ,teachers need to skillfully draw on students experience enrich the circumstances. Teachers can show they value, students’lives and identities in variety of ways. Some are small, like taking the time to learn the proper pronunciation of every students’s name or getting to know young peoples families. Other requires more time and investment, like building curriculum around personal narratives or incorporating identity-based reponse into the study of texts. At the community level,it is important to undwrstand neighborhood demographics ,strengths, concerns, conflicts and challenges. Like students themselves, these dynamics may change frequently. For teachers whose experiences differ from those of their students,it is critical to exercise activities. They must bring some extra efforts like,
• An asset-based view of youth and unfamiliar identity groups.
• A commitment to avoiding and challenging sterotypes.
• A willingness to let students define their own identies.
• A sense of openness and cultural humility.
Building A Classroom Culture:(Instructor point of view)(As general)
There are many ways to built a classroom culture but here we just discuss few, main ways for building a classroom culture in my view are:
1: Use survey to check in with students:
Creats serveys at the beigning of the school year to get to know your students better and gauge how to offer more personalized instructions. Determine their likes and dislikes with regard to subject matter, learning style, and pace. Throughout the year check in at least once a month with students to show you care. You don’t have to ask them “ how am I doing as a teacher?’ but rather “is what I’m doing working for you?” or even “ are you enjoying learning” The point is to show you’r genuinely invested in their learnig.
2: Use colour psychology:
Warm colour keep us cheering up or feeling cheerful and alert; cool colours permotes calm and reflection. Think about which coloures you are using when you creates decoration for your classroom, make slides fro lectures, and design handouts and worksheets. Black and white may be the most cost effective option, but you might be surprised what a little colour can do for students engagement.
3: Make learning meaningful:
You know the old refrain:”When are we going to use this in the real life?” It,s that student in the back of your percalculus class, sitting with his chin on his fist as you solve yet another problem using the quadratic formula. Well , its fair question. Try to connect learnig with the real world as often as possible.
4: Create an experience:
The jewelry store Tiffany’s recently began offering events, such as sunday brunch, at some of their locations in the US the point is that , say their marketing director,is to creat “ instagrammable moments “since younger consumers are more experienced(oriented) and see less value in material objects like siamond neckless, on their own. We learn best when education feels like an experience.
5: Create a class social media account:
It may be a while before its considered cool to post your school work on your personal facebook page ,but class instagram and pintrest accounts might just do the trick for now. Srt up a few social accounts for class and invite students to follow and take turns managing content.
6: Start each day with an inspiring quote:
Choose a new quote each day to display as students file into class. It can be a quote that prepares student for the lesson ahead or has its own lasting value. It can be an expert from a book,a speech, a film or any other source of your choosing.
7: Learn together:
Students ten to think of their teachers as the sage-on-the-stage the all knowing harbinger of information. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact students are more likely to be engaged if there’s an expectation early on that learrnig should sometimes happen together.
8: Encourage co-creation:
When students work together they learn more than the material at hand. They learn to support each other, empathize, lead, negotiate, listen, and trade skills. These skills that not only create a valueable classroom culture but also follow students outside of the classroom and into the real world.
9: Show you expect the best:
Show you truly believe in your students and they will rise to the occasion. The attitude should be one of pride in your students before they havw even given you a reason to be proud. If you treat all students by your belief in them and motivated to try harder in class.
10: Celebrate learnig:
Whwnever you can, take even a brief moment to acknowledge that learnig has occurred and to celebrate it. Students are ar school because they have to be but if we can help them realize that an education is something to be earnd and valued ,not taken from granted, they will be more interested in it.
Dimensions Of Classroom Culture:(According to my class)
There are mainly seven dimensions of organizational culture which are applied on the classroom.
1:Attention To Detail:
In our classroom our teachers put great attention to detail as to how the students perform their taks precisely and accurately. For example when one of our teachers gave us assigement ,he gave us instructions about the formet and length, also about the grammer , and marked them accordingly.
2: Outcome Orientation:
Teachers afre concered about the outcome that is achieved by the students during the smester. For example, one of our teachers told us that no matter which book we take as our study text, as long as we fulfill the requirements of the questions in the exams it is acceptable.
3: People Orientation:
Teachers are always concered about the students of the class and care if the tasks can be achieved by them. For example before giving us any assigement or presentation they always consider whether we can complete them on time or not.
4: Team Orientation:
The culture in our class is team oriented, to enhance team capabilities. For example teachers occasionaly give presentation and assigements to a group rather than a single person.
5: Aggressiveness
Aggressiveness is relatively less in our class. The culture is more cooperative rather than competitive. Foe example ,due to the team work given to our class as presentations ans assigements we help each other in overcoming our weakness.
6: Innovation And Risk Taking:
Although it is not some ideal risk taking or innovation environment ,still our teachers are working hard to make students think out of the box and do brainstorming. For example assigements of case study are a good method of making the students innovation.
7: Stability
Stability in the outcome is also a priority of our environment. For example participation in class room is encpuraged but a student decreasing his attention in class is discourage.
